White Pines Camp Out Info

On Monday permission slips were handed out for the next camp out. The camp out is Oct 7-9 at the White Pines State Park in Oregon, IL. We will be meeting at Light of Christ church at 5:30 pm on Friday and plan to be home Sunday around noon.

The permission slip is due next Monday, September 26th. Meal planning and duty rosters will be done on Monday, October 3rd.

Our SPL & PLC have a fun event planned for the camp out. There will be a competition between scouts and leaders/adults. The events will include competitions on scouts skills like fire building, knots, lashings, cooking and overall campsite.

Like our last camp out, we need parents to join us in helping with transportation to the camp but also in the competition.

Finally, the D300 middle schools have a band event being planned for the Friday we leave. The 7th and 8th grade band members will be performing during half time at the Jacob's High School football game. The expected end time for this band event is after 9:00 pm. Any scouts that want to participate in the band event and the camp out should contact me in the next week. We currently have a parent that will drive these scouts out to the camp site Saturday morning. Space will be limited and we will need you to drop off your gear Friday night to be transported up in the troop trailer.

This should be a fun event. The competition will be great. The event judges are our SPL and ASPL. I am sure they will be fair and just to the adults. Well, at least maybe they will let us win one event.

The troop is meeting tonight, 7p, at Light of Christ church. All scouts that can, please attend.

We have a special guest tonight. John Elliot is an Eagle scout from Troop 368 currently serving in the Marines. He is home on leave and will be talking to the boys about being an Eagle scout.

We also want to wrap up summer camp. All first year scouts please bring your Boy Scout handbooks and Eagle Oasis booklets so we can get the information updated. For older scouts, I have lots of completed blue cards. I will pass them out as well as any partials from summer camp. Time to make plans on how to finish up those partials.

Finally, anyone who wants to attend Space Jam, I will be collecting money and permission slips tonight.

Summer Camp

  • The drive takes about 4 hours without stopping.  We will take a bathroom break half way.  But, we will be in the car for a long time.  Boys should plan accordingly.  They should plan to have their day packs with them in the car.  Any electronics taken for the ride will be collected by the leaders upon arrival at camp.
  • Scouts should wear their Class A uniform for the ride up and back to camp.
  • Scouts should wear have their swim suits in their day pack for the swim test.  Preferably, they should wear them to make things quicker.
  • I have gotten updated information from Camp Napowan since our meeting a few weeks ago.  We need to be at camp by as close to 1 pm as possible.  So, we will be leaving Woodman's by 9:00 am on Sunday, July 10th.  All scouts need to be at Woodman's by 7:30 am as we have a lot of equipment to get loaded.    Scouts should pack a lunch in their day packs to eat on the ride up.  We will be stopping to take a bathroom break but not to buy food.  Please have the boys bring a lunch.
  • Coming home from camp, we need to leave camp between 10 and 11 am on Saturday, July 16th.  The plan is to have the trailer loaded and the campsite cleaned up as close to 10 am as possible.  So, once all our drivers arrive, we will be able to load up and head home.  Coming home we will stop to purchase lunch since packing a lunch will not be practical.  Please make sure the boys have money to purchase a lunch on Saturday.
  • Any medications that the boys will need to take prescription or over the counter, must be turned into the health office at camp.  The medicine must be in its original packaging with the pharmacy label if prescription.  Please put them all in a Ziploc bag with the scouts name on the bag.  Also, any include any instructions on taking like once a day in the morning, etc.  Do not pack the bag but set it aside for the leaders to collect at Woodman's before we leave.  The only except are meds needed for emergency situations like inhalers or epi-pens, etc.
  • Don't forget we will have a bank to hold scouts money at camp.  Please put money, small bills if possible, in an envelope with the scouts name on it.  Please talk to your son about how they should be spending the money at camp.  Remember, some merit badges have a cost that goes along with them.  Finally, please mark with a sticking note, money for Saturday's lunch so that it is not mistakenly spent on other stuff at camp.  Do not pack the envelope but set it aside for the leaders to collect at Woodman's before we leave.
